“Collage As-Tu?”

Collage as-tu?” is an art exhibition of new collaged and painted works presented in Castlemaine, Victoria. Cut and paste, quick and dirty, cheap and nasty, bright and glossy, short and snappy — these collages examine ideas of fast making processes and fast-becoming obsolete print media.

I’m using illustrations from Children’s Encyclopaedias from the 80s’, old (and paid) photographers work from the National Geographic, Sunset books, medical journals, home companions and instructional texts.

The title is based on the French origins of the word collage, mashed up with the French question “Quel âge as-tu?”, in English “how old are you?”, referring to myself, an older parent trying desperately to stay young through her art practice. I use humour to interrogate my own attitudes: to parenting, to sport, to social interactions and cultural trends. Anthropomorphism, symbolism, narrative-based work and popular culture often feature in my artwork.

Influenced by time poverty (specifically having to make artwork on the fly due to parenting and working), the imagination of my six year old, the flights of fancy I have while washing the dishes, and my roaming monkey mind, I have been making these in little snatched moments – after tea, before school pickup, in the wee hours of the morning before the demands of the day clamour for attention at my studio door.  Artistic influences include: Hannah Hoch, Man Ray, Deborah Kelly and the Exquisite Corpse game of the Surrealists.
