Detail: Installation of “Australia Heads” series, sculptures whose animal heads were designed after Australian Rules Football mascots. These were meant to be intimidating and not necessarily inclusive, much like how I found sports to be as a young woman who liked Australian Rules, but felt prohibited from enjoying being part of it as a female person. The parts I enjoy about sports are the community social ritual and the less (conventionally understood or revered as) masculine, more vulnerable aspects of it – such as graceful losing, shaking hands, sharing skills and knowledge.
