I created this as part of a Summer Class, where I was both an assistant to and a student of the wonderful artist Jason Harper. As a site-specific installation project, I created many cigarette butts from raw clay. At the corner of 7th and Indiana, I had seen countless butts outside this one house, and was astounded at the accumulation. I replaced the real cigarette butts with the unfired red and white clay versions, which would create a visible mess when crushed underfoot. I tried this twice, the results were underwhelming, but I like to think someone observant might have noticed!
